Liverpool round-up: Philippe Coutinho set to stay; bookies favourites for Jamie Vardy; Virgil Van Dijk latest

Barcelona’s plan to sign Philippe Coutinho has been called off, according to the as their new manager doesn’t see how the Brazilian would fit into his plans.

Ernesto Valverde wants a more defensive-minded midfielder behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, instead of an attacking playmaker such as Coutinho. This will come as great news for everyone associated with Liverpool as the Brazilian has flourished under Klopp and is set to be a key player as the Reds look to build on their previous campaign.

In other news, the Reds have been linked with numerous hitmen over the recent days as Jurgen Klopp continues his hunt to add firepower to his side.

slashed the odds of Jamie Vardy making a move north to Anfield this summer and the Reds are now the front-runners to sign the Englishman. Vardy would offer an incredible amount of pace and energy to Klopp’s team and he seems the right candidate to lead their high-intensity pressing style.

The Leicester striker would aid Klopp immensely as he is rarely out injured unlike their current options, most notably Daniel Sturridge, and he also has a natural ability in finding the back of the net. Liverpool are 6/1 to sign Vardy, but no move has been made as of yet.

Another striker that has been more heavily linked to Liverpool is Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette. a French outlet, suggested that the Lyon striker was being courted by the Reds during the season. However, Atletico Madrid were favourites to sign Lacazette, as reported by the .

The Spanish club failed in their appeal that would have overturned their transfer ban, meaning a host of clubs now have the chance to sign the French striker. If he was to join Liverpool, the hitman would have a wealth of creative talent behind him to help him to find his feet in English football.

The Reds are also the  favourites to sign Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk this summer, although Manchester City are also tipped to purchase the Dutch centre-back.

The  reported that Van Dijk is keen to play under Jurgen Klopp while he may also see Liverpool’s back line as the easiest to get into, with Joel Matip the only defender that impressed over the whole duration of last season.
