Liverpool round-up: Max Meyer hints at move; clubs want Mamadou Sakho; Pepjin Ljinders rejects exit
Schalke’s 21-year-old sensation Max Meyer has revealed that talks over a new contract have stalled, putting Liverpool on alert alongside fellow Premier League side Tottenham, believe the . The attacking midfielder could now be subject to interest in the summer with his existing deal set to expire next summer.
A first team regular for the Bundesliga outfit, Meyer has made 32 appearances this season, usually playing in a central attacking role but also being capable of playing on either flank, offering the kind of flexibility that Jurgen Klopp has seemed to be keen on in some of his previous targets.
Such a move could be funded in part by the sale of Mamadou Sakho, as the say that Southampton will make a move for the Frenchman in the summer as Crystal Palace do not have a right to buy option included in the loan agreement which has taken him to London for the duration of the current campaign.
Sakho has been hugely impressive for Sam Allardyce’s team but still faces an uncertain future on Merseyside after being frozen out due to his behaviour in pre-season and at the tail end of last season, with Jurgen Klopp clearly far from impressed with his conduct.
First team coach Pepjin Ljinders has reportedly turned down the opportunity to move into first team management to stay with the Reds due to his loyalty to Jurgen Klopp. He told , as translated by the and the :
“This is not the time to think about the next step and personal project. I know the interest of several clubs and appreciate this. But timing is important and loyalty towards Liverpool and Jurgen. My whole focus goes to assisting Jurgen. To compete in this intense Premier League, to fight for prices and to give colour to the new generation of players. I am loyal and therefore it would be difficult to move from Liverpool and this project with Jurgen after only one full year.”
Ljinders reportedly had offers from Holland to move into management but has opted to repay the faith shown in him by Klopp, who promoted him to the first team from the under 16s almost immediately after the German arrived.
