Liverpool round-up: Jurgen Klopp reacts to derby victory; Julian Brandt agrees Bayern move; Sadio Mane injury update
Jurgen Klopp discussed his side’s thrashing of Everton this weekend as he praised his team for a complete display by telling the of his pride in the performance, saying:
“We knew about the intensity we needed to be ready for, and I thought we were. After the first few minutes we controlled the game, we found the spaces between their lines, we brought Phil into really good positions. I said to the boys before the game that it needs to be a mixture of being really smart and emotional – not only emotional. I thought they did really well, controlled it and scored fantastic goals. The last 15 or 20 minutes was a little bit wild, they tried everything and we didn’t have the legs anymore to control the game more. We had a few moments but that’s how it is, you have to defend with passion. We did this.”
Goals from Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi were enough to stretch Everton’s run without a win at Anfield for another year and send Ronald Koeman and co. home empty handed.
However, there was some bad news for the club this weekend as German newspaper reported that Bayer Leverkusen winger and Liverpool target Julian Brandt has agreed on a deal in principle to join Bayern Munich and remain in the Bundesliga with a summer switch expected.
Having featured for his country against England in the latest international break, Jurgen Klopp was thought to be keen on the winger to add depth to Liverpool’s front line, but it now seems that he will have to look elsewhere to complement his current squad in preparation for next season.
He would provide competition and depth for the likes of Sadio Mane, who sustained a nasty looking injury on Saturday in the only blot on a great performance against Everton. Jurgen Klopp provided an update on the Senegal star, telling the :
“Today we played a really good game. Nearly everything was perfect, we win it, the performance was good [but] then we lose Sadio Mane. When I saw him in the dressing room, it didn’t look like he’ll be ready for Wednesday.”
“We will see, hopefully it’s not that serious, but of course it’s not nothing and that makes our life not easier, I would say. I don’t know exactly [what the injury is], I don’t want to speculate now. Obviously he has pain and it didn’t look like it’s only a knock or a muscle or something, but we have to wait.”
The right-winger appeared to injure his knee whilst his ankle also seemed at risk in replays of the incident, which saw him fall awkwardly after a tough challenge, but left the ground with no crutches or cost in a positive update with more news expected this week.
