Liverpool round-up: Joel Matip injury update; Chelsea winning race for Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac; Stoke want compensation
Jurgen Klopp had revealed that Joel Matip could possibly have played 90 minutes against Bournemouth on Wednesday night, meaning that he is likely to play a key role when they travel to face Stoke City in the Premier League this weekend. Klopp is quoted by the as saying:
“Have you ever had back problems? I can explain exactly how it was. He came on the pitch this morning for a little, little session. It looked good. But then he had to fix his boots and then it didn’t look good.”
“Obviously you can find someone in the game to fix your boot but I thought it’s not 100% and this game is not 100%. We brought him on because there was another warming up and we asked again and it was then better. Yes, maybe probably he could have played 90 minutes, not sure.”
His presence would certainly have been welcome given that Ragnar Klavan was highlighted as one of those whose performances contributed to what was a potentially hugely important and very disappointing result against the Cherries.
In more bad news, it seems that Chelsea are set to win the race for Schalke left-back Sead Kolasinac according to the . The Blues are leading the way in their pursuit of the Serbian, with Liverpool among those to have made an offer, alongside Manchester City and Everton.
The Bundesliga full-back is available on a free transfer after running down his contract at the club, much like Joel Matip did last season, but it now seems that Kolasinac will not follow in the footsteps of his former team-mate in making a move to Anfield like the central defender did.
Off the field, things are going from bad to worse for the Reds too, as the believe that Stoke City chairman Peter Coates is preparing to take legal action against the club after they were found guilty of tapping up one of their youth players in a breach of Premier League rules.
Ahead of the meeting between the two sides this weekend, Liverpool have been handed a two-year transfer ban on academy players, with the second year suspended, with a £100,000 fine, but the repercussions could go further than that if Coates does take the club to court.
