Liverpool Round-Up: January bid was rejected; Matip decides on Cameroon future; Ojo demands outlined
Despite a quiet month of transfer activity, the claim that the Reds had a bid worth £2.5 million for Nottingham Forest sensation Ben Brereton rejected. The 17-year-old scored a late winner for his side against Aston Villa at the weekend and is also attracting strong interest from Manchester United with both clubs keen to bring him to the Premier League given his remarkable track record during his development at the County Ground. One of the brightest young English talents in the game, the battle for Brereton could be one of the transfer sagas of the summer transfer window.
One man who remained on Merseyside in January was Joel Matip, despite having had the opportunity to have been part of a victorious African Cup of Nations campaign with Cameroon. However, the say that the central defender has no plans to return to the international scene and is currently fully focused upon his role at Anfield with the team’s leaky defence in particularly bad form of late.
New under 23s manager Mike Garrity has explained what Sheyi Ojo has to do to break into the Liverpool first team after his superb display and match-winning goal for the youth side against Tottenham at Anfield. Garrity told the :
“That’s what he can do. And if truth be told, he doesn’t do it enough. He’s well capable of producing those moments. The first-team manager and ourselves are beating the drum every day about him being direct and positive. That’s what he has to bring to the group. Whenever he’s going to play, he has to bring those moments on a more consistent basis. In the second half he played with a lot more direction, he worked really hard and I’m glad he got his goal.”
Having featured in the FA Cup this season, Ojo will now be hoping for more regular Premier League action.
