Liverpool round-up: Emre Can will not be sold; Klopp rules out Joe Hart move; Jordan Henderson injury blow
In news that will please many fans, the report that midfielder Emre Can will not be sold this summer regardless of the progress made on contract talks.
This news will quash fears that the German could leave Anfield in the upcoming transfer window, as he enters the final 12 months of his existing deal this summer.
Can is demanding a salary worth £100,000 per week, which the club are reluctant to meet, but the 23-year-old’s performances of late have shown his huge importance to the team with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana missing.
Meanwhile, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken to deny rumours which claimed that Joe Hart was on his way to Anfield, revealing in a press conference that he is not looking for a goalkeeper as he said, as quoted by :
“Extra competition? You ask about goalkeepers but even though you don’t say the name is it about Joe Hart? We don’t usually talk about these sort of things but in this particular case I think we can.
“He is a fantastic goalkeeper, the goalkeeper of the English national team, the highest quality, but we have highest-quality goalkeepers. It is not for us in this moment and hopefully not for us in the future – not because of Joe but we already have two strong goalkeepers.
“Wardy (Danny Ward) is at Huddersfield and playing a brilliant season – he is our player so we will bring him back next year so there is competition.”
The Manchester City stopper had been linked after criticism of both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet at different times this season, though Mignolet, like Can, has come in for praise for his displays in the last few weeks.
Another key headline from Klopp’s pres conference was regarding the return of captain Jordan Henderson from injury, with the midfielder clearly still some way off a return. The German head coach was quoted by as saying:
“Still nothing new [on Henderson]. I don’t know, we will see. In this moment he cannot really train. We have to wait for this moment, if there’s something else to say about this I would say.
“We are in intense talks with different departments, but we have to wait. He is already not patient anymore. It’s not cool. He looks really healthy actually, but he cannot play football, that’s the situation.”
The heel injury has kept the 26-year-old out of action since mid-February with what was originally thought to be a short term injury problem but has now kept him out for over two months.
