Liverpool round-up: Emre Can contract talks update; latest on Lucas’ future; plans for youngsters revealed
The claim that, after Emre Can’s wonder goal against Watford on Monday night, contract talks over a new deal with the German midfielder are expected to progress more rapidly after being at a standstill for months. The club had been reluctant to meet his demands but have been impressed by his recent form.
As a result, the midfielder could join the likes of Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren in signing a new deal to commit to the club with one year left on his existing deal. A string of commanding performances in recent weeks, capped by his match winning display at Vicarage Road, are likely to be the reason why.
However, the man who provided the assist for Can’s acrobatic effort, Lucas Leiva, looks set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. Turkish outlet report that the Brazilian’s agent held talks with Galatasaray but the two parties could not reach an agreement.
Having spent ten years on Merseyside, the holding midfielder is believed to have demanded a deal similar to his £80,000 per week at Anfield with a £1.5 mlilion signing on fee, but the Turkish club did not even entertain the idea of entering into such an agreement with the 30-year-old.
Two other players whose futures are unclear for other reasons are youngsters Ben Woodburn and Rhian Brewster, as they face a decision on whether to fight for a place at the club or head out on loan to gain more experience. Manager Jurgen Klopp discussed the situation as he told the :
“They have to develop, they have to learn, they have 17 or 18-year careers ahead of them. They need to be prepared for the moment when they are really proper players and until then we use them when we need to. We involve them when we think they are ready. It should not be the case that we are relying on them for next season, but there will always be space for them to perform in a few matches if they are ready in this moment.”
The duo have made the bench on several occasions this season, with Woodburn making a number of appearances and even featuring in the starting line-up on occasion, whilst Brewster is yet to make his first team debut.
