Liverpool round-up: Adam Lallana injury update; Lazar Markovic criticises club; Klopp praises Rhian Brewster
Jurgen Klopp has revealed to the that Adam Lallana is set to feature against Watford and could even be in contention to start after a prolonged spell of over a month on the sidelines after picking up an injury whilst on England duty. Lallana is back in training but is not yet clear if he will be fit enough to play.
Klopp also added that Daniel Sturridge is nearing a return to fitness and is back in training, though Monday night’s fixture against Watford could be too soon for the striker to return. Sturridge has struggled with another of injuries this season but it was thought that his latest problem could have ruled him out for the season.
Whilst Sturridge’s future is unclear, that is also the case for winger Lazar Markovic who is currently out on loan at Hull City. However, the Serbian has hit out at the club as the quote him as criticising their handling of him since he joined from Benfica for £20 million in 2015. He said:
“Liverpool spent money on me and I believe they should have believed more in my ability. Both Liverpool and the manager. I believed I should have played more than I did. I got the chance to play more elsewhere.
“I have no problems with that. We don’t know what will happen yet, it depends on the Liverpool situation. I still have two years on my contract at Liverpool. We shall see. I enjoy playing in the Premier League and would like to stay in the Premier League.”
With two goals in 13 appearances in all competitions since joining the Tigers, Markovic has certainly put forward his case for playing a role at Anfield upon his return, though it now seems that he is burning bridges and could be set for a permanent exit this summer with two years left to run on his contract.
He could be replaced by one of the club’s youngsters, such as Ben Woodburn. Another young sensation has been on the end of praise from Jurgen Klopp recently, as the manager spoke to to praise 17-year-old Rhian Brewster for his rise to fame as he made the bench for the first team for the first time recently. Klopp said:
“Rhian made outstanding steps in the last few months… He is physically stronger, a wonderfully skilled boy, real striker, good finisher, and fantastic work ethic… He’s 17 years old now and already plays U23s, that’s a wonderful step for him [and] the next step in his development.
“He was on the bench last week because we thought he deserved it and we could use him at the right moment. The game was not for this but it doesn’t mean that it will not happen in the future. He’s on a very good way, honestly, a very, very good boy.”
Brewster could be in contention yet again for the Reds against Watford on Monday night, though he may see his role return to the under 23 squad with a number of key men like Lallana and Sturridge returning to action with the first team squad.
