Liverpool rejected signing hours after agreeing a deal with player ready to fly to England

Liverpool remain in the market for potential opportunities with just hours left for the transfer window to slam shut.

After signing Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Reds moved quickly for Federico Chiesa, who officially signed a four-year deal yesterday.

Lewis Steele feels Liverpool want to make at least one more signing but face a race against time to get deals over the line with the clock ticking.

Yesterday, surprise claims from the Mexican media suggested a deal to bring Chino Huerta to Liverpool was close to completion.

However, it now appears as if the Reds pulled the plug on the transfer ahead of deadline day.

According to , Huerta was set to agree a deal to sign for the Reds and join Sunderland on loan for the 2024-25 campaign.

However, the Championship club didn’t endorse the arrival of the Mexican international, so walked away from the deal altogether.

The report also states that Huerta was ready to fly to England to complete all the formalities of the deal, coming as a massive blow to the player.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool rekindle a deal for the 23-year-old attacker, who is currently plying his trade with Liga MX club UNAM.

Did Liverpool really need Huerta?

Not much is known about the 23-year-old, who has featured ten times for the Mexican national team since making his debut in 2023.

Liverpool may have thought he’s one for the future, but with six quality attackers already at the club, it might have been a step too far even as a succession plan.

Huerta has turned out for six Mexican clubs in his young career so far and would probably be better off continuing his development in his homeland.

If he carries on performing in the same vein, a move to Europe could be on the horizon for him.

As for Liverpool, outgoings are likely to dictate whether or not they dip into the market in the dying embers of the summer transfer window.
