Liverpool: Race to sign striker; midfielder back in training; winger gets hostile reception

The  claim that Liverpool are hot on the heels of Arsenal and Southampton in the chase for Stade Rennais striker Paul-Georges Ntep. The 24-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer and he has already told his club that he will be leaving on a free transfer, with no destination yet clear.

With two caps to his name for the French national team, he has pedigree, but he is yet to score in six league games this season. Also capable of playing on the left wing, he may suit the Jurgen Klopp model of flexible front men with pace, but he is far from prolific and would hardly be able to justify a starting place for the Reds.

In some superb news for Jurgen Klopp, the  report that key midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum has returned to training this week and could be in contention for the trip to West Brom on Saturday. After picking up a hip injury on international duty with the Netherlands, Wijnaldum was forced to watch on from the stands for the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Monday night but is now back in training.

He was joined by young defender Joe Gomez, who returns after over a year out after suffering complications in his recovery from a knee injury. The former Charlton man was applauded by his teammates on his return to action and he’ll now hope to provide cover across the back four for Klopp.

The  also provide an update on loanee Lazar Markovic, who was booed as Sporting Lisbon fell to defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night in Champions League action. The Serbian was replaced after 65 minutes having had a torrid evening with little impact and received a hostile reception as he departed.

After making his £20 million move from Benfica to Anfield in 2014, Markovic has struggled to live up to expectations and failed to convince Jurgen Klopp that he deserved a second chance on Merseyside.
