Liverpool player has been asking for clips for £47.5m Man City star to learn from
Jarell Quansah has reportedly taken a leaf out of a Manchester City defender’s book to hone his craft as he continues to cement his status as a key player for Liverpool.
The towering defender was a relatively unknown commodity even to the staunchest Liverpool fan last summer, but a year on, he has enjoyed a meteoric rise with the Reds that saw him earn a call-up to the preliminary England squad for a training camp ahead of Euro 2024.
Quansah wasn’t on the flight to Germany with Gareth Southgate‘s squad, but the fact that he received international recognition despite being on loan at Bristol Rovers as recently as last year is a startling example of how much he has developed.
The 21-year-old has Virgil van Dijk – who he believes is the best defender in the world – to learn from, but the Dutchman is not the only player who he takes inspiration from.
John Stones and Sergio Ramos among defenders Quansah has studied
According to a report from , the young Liverpool defender has studied clips of John Stones, Sergio Ramos and Leonardo Bonucci to see how they move off the ball, while he also watched wide-angle shots and drone footage of Van Dijk after specifically requesting Liverpool to provide him with those videos.
Bonucci has retired and Ramos is in the twilight years of his career, but Stones is at the peak of his powers for Manchester City and is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world in his position. The pair are likely to have rubbed shoulders at the England training camp ahead of Euro 2024 and if Quansah continues in the same trajectory, they could well forge a partnership at the heart of the Three Lions’ backline in the years ahead.

The same report states that Quansah wants to study as many different players as he can to hone his craft, which just goes to show how committed he is to becoming a better player.
What does the future hold for Quansah at Liverpool?
With Joel Matip departing Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of last season and the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez prone to injuries, Quansah can cement his place as Van Dijk’s preferred centre-back partner under Arne Slot.
Sepp van den Berg has returned from a productive loan spell with FSV Mainz in the Bundesliga and will look to force himself into Slot’s plans for the upcoming season,
Quansah’s spot in the starting XI is by no means a foregone conclusion, but he is clearly highly rated by Liverpool, who had no intention of including him in a player-plus-cash deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. That said, Liverpool were ready to sell Gomez for £45m to sign the ex-Everton winger, suggesting that Quansah could be above his compatriot in the pecking order.
The 21-year-old was highly regarded by Jurgen Klopp and has looked assured in pre-season under Slot, so the conditions are perfect for him to kick on and have a great second season for Liverpool.
