Liverpool offered chance to sign midfielder Jurgen Klopp wanted to buy back in 2022

Liverpool are now in a race against time to sign a new central midfielder before the 2024/25 campaign begins.

After contact was made with Real Sociedad, Liverpool thought they had signed Martin Zubimendi – although the Spain international decided to stay in the Basque Country.

Francois Plateau now states that Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Frenkie de Jong – as Barcelona are willing to include the Dutchman in a bid to land Luis Diaz.

The Barcelona No.21 made 30 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring two goals.

It comes after SPORT claimed back in 2022 that Klopp wanted to bring De Jong to Liverpool – although a move failed to materialise.

Therefore, offloading the Colombia international in exchange for a world class central midfielder seems like a no brainer given Arne Slot’s need for such a player, and it would then open up a space for Liverpool to put Anthony Gordon into the starting XI with Diaz gone.

Liverpool were incredibly close to signing Gordon earlier this summer, and even had a medical booked for the England international with Joe Gomez moving to Newcastle as part of the deal – according to the .
