Liverpool now miss out as £50m target moves elsewhere

Liverpool have already missed out on one midfield target this summer in Martin Zubimendi – and lightning has now struck twice.

Earlier this summer, Liverpool thought they had wrapped up a £51m deal to sign Zubimendi before the Spain international opted to stay at Real Sociedad – and the Reds are yet to find an alternative.

There were rumours that Liverpool had settled on another option – although he is now moving elsewhere…

Liverpool miss out on Teun Koopmeiners

A story from last week claimed that Liverpool were considering a late move to sign Teun Koopmeiners from Atalanta.

The Netherlands international has previously worked under Arne Slot at AZ Alkmaar – scoring goals in 58 appearances – and a reunion was in the pipeline after Zubimendi decided to stay in San Sebastien.

Now, however – according to Fabrizio Romano – Koopmeiners is about to sign for Juventus.

The reliable Italian journalist gave the update his signature “here we go” as the Dutchman prepares to join Thiago Motta in Turin, after Juventus agreed a €59m (£50m) package with Atalanta.

A medical is now being arranged after Koopmeiners shook hands on a five-year contract with the Italian giants.

The 26-year-old worked his way onto Liverpool’s radar after an outstanding 2023/24 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in 51 appearances as Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League.

Arne Slot has an alternative

Koopmeiners is not the only central midfielder Liverpool have looked at in recent days.

A separate story from claimed that Liverpool are considering a swoop to sign Feyenoord No.8 Quinten Timber – the brother of Arsenal No.12 Jurrien Timber – with Arne Slot unconvinced by Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones.

The Netherlands international played under Slot last season as Feyenoord finished second in the Eredivisie behind PSV Eindhoven, scoring eight goals while providing ten assists in 44 games.

Be sure to keep an eye on developments at Anfield ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline, as Liverpool could still sign a new central midfielder.
