Liverpool need to join reported race and bring bargain Serie A man back to England – TBR View
It is becoming more and more clear that Gini Wijnaldum will be wearing a different shirt to the red of Liverpool next season. We are now well into February, and his contract has not been extended. A replacement is needed.
Instead of wasting any more time in getting the Dutchman to sign a new deal, Liverpool need to bring in a midfielder with similar expertise. One who can do the same job, with the same level of quality but also with a comparable level of experience.
They need a player who has played in the Champions League, one that has won trophies. They need a midfielder with plenty of work rate, a key player for their national team – but also available on a cheap price. This is exactly what Wijnaldum is.
Finding a like-for-like is going to be hard, but perhaps the perfect opportunity has just presented itself – in the form of Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey. The Italian champions are keen to get his pay cheque off the wage bill.
Signed by Juve from Arsenal in the summer of 2019 after 11 excellent years with the Gunners, Ramsey – like Wijnaldum – left on a free. The Old Lady snapped him up, but he has failed to recapture his form, even under the guidance of Andrea Pirlo.
Ramsey has played just 55 times in all competitions, having a hand in just 10 goals. Yes, that lack of form can be attributed to Ramsey, but perhaps Juve should also take some blame – given he has started just 28, and completed 90 minutes two times.
He embodies everything Wijnaldum offers to Liverpool. Work rate, top-tier quality, important goals and assists from midfield, a regular at international level, huge experience but still only 30 – and the latest reports claim he is available on the cheap.
he can be sold for a fee between £8.75million and £13.5million, but Tottenham and Wolves are interested. The chance to join Liverpool, though, might prove tempting for Ramsey. Certainly, Liverpool have got to take a look.
It is a move that Liverpool cannot afford to ignore. If Wijnaldum goes, Ramsey is the ideal like-for-like replacement.
