Liverpool must reject Roma’s reported advances for Lovren

According to , Roma have identified signing Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren as a priority. The Serie A club have apparently held talks with the Croatian player’s agent.

The fact that the 30-year-old was not included in Jurgen Klopp’s squad for the Red’s Premier League opener against Norwich City on Friday night suggests that his future at Anfield may be in doubt.

The No. 6 certainly is not Liverpool’s most talented defender. He is behind the talismanic Virgil van Dijk, the promising Joe Gomez and the reliable Joel Matip in the pecking order. However, he represents an experienced and impressive fourth choice option.

Given that Liverpool will be expected to compete for a number of trophies this season, they will need such squad players to call upon. If they are serious about competing with Manchester City, they cannot afford to weaken themselves at this stage. Over the course of the campaign, Lovren will still get plenty of game time with the Merseyside outfit.

A move to Roma may appeal to the 53-cap Croatia international, but the Reds must block his exit. Whilst the European transfer market remains open, the English window has now closed. This means that Klopp would not be able to replace Lovren until January.

What’s more, Liverpool’s defence looked somewhat rocky in pre-season and against the Canaries. If they don’t improve at the back soon, there may be an opportunity for Lovren to force his way back into the starting XI.
