Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita hasn’t met pre-season hope of Dean Saunders

Naby Keita made his move to Liverpool from Red Bull Salzburg in the 2018 summer transfer window and he’s yet to show his best over a sustained period of time at Anfield.

The midfielder cost the Reds £48million () to bring to Merseyside and he arrived as an extremely highly-rated talent.

He made 33 appearances during his debut season for Jurgen Klopp’s team, where he showed glimpses of his aggressive dribbling in possession and work-rate in the centre of the park.

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders claimed before the beginning of this campaign that he had high hopes for Keita and was expecting him to kick on.

“Keita looked to me as if he could be one of the best players in the league at some point in the future,”

“He’s had a few injuries, showed flashes of brilliance, but I’m hoping this season that he can kick on now.”

Keita has unfortunately been non-existent in terms of being one of the best players in the Premier League and this season has followed a similar pattern to the last, which is why Saunders’ wish has fallen flat.

The 25-year-old has had a couple of injuries that have halted his progress, plus he’s not had an extended run of games due to form.

He’s scored three goals in just 18 senior appearances this season and mainly watched his teammates achieve brilliant success on the pitch, as they storm towards a first ever Premier League title for the club.

The Guinea international doesn’t make a best Liverpool XI as it stands when everyone’s fit, so his job has to be breaking into the team before he looks at being one of the best around.

Keita is an athletic midfielder that is agile on the ball and has so much potential, but the price tag paid for him looks steep right now.
