‘8/10’, ‘really bright, intelligent performance’: Media lauds 19-year-old’s Liverpool display despite 4-0 loss
Liverpool fell to a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United in their pre-season friendly encounter in Thailand.
The Reds were contesting their first match of the summer, with Jurgen Klopp using 32 players during the match.
Liverpool also began the game with five teenagers, while Erik ten Hag went with a stronger, more familiar starting XI.
As a result, it didn’t take the Red Devils long to break the deadlock, netting after just 12 minutes.
Jadon Sancho fired into the bottom corner after pouncing on an error from Isaac Mabaya.
Liverpool then threatened through Luke Chambers, Fabio Carvalho and Luis Diaz.
However, United struck again on the half-hour mark, Fred chipping in from 18 yards out.
Anthony Martial added a third three minutes later, and Facundo Pellistri made it four midway through the second half.
While it was a poor result for Liverpool, it looked very much as though Jurgen Klopp’s main goal was to give as many players a runout as possible.

And several Liverpool players gave good performances, with Harvey Elliott’s 30-minute outing earning plenty of praise.
“Began very strongly and maintained his form, with his nimble footwork and distribution helping him find spaces,” wrote the .
Meanwhile, gave Elliott 8/10 and wrote: “The teenager made some classy touches and passes. A really bright, intelligent performance.”
The and both opted to give the Reds prodigy 6/10 for his display.
“Also very lively with several nice touches and good link up with Mabaya down the right,” wrote the former. “Still raw though, it’s easy to forget he is only 19.”
And the latter wrote: “Fizzed about but end product lacked on occasion. Another encouraging display nonetheless.”
Liverpool’s next pre-season match takes place on Friday 15 July, the Reds facing Crystal Palace in Singapore.
