Liverpool: Klopp on January signings; Watford reaction; influential midfielder in-line for contract
Jurgen Klopp has hinted that the club may be forced into the transfer market in January as injury to Danny Ings and Sadio Mane’s likely international call-up to the Senegal squad for the African Cup of Nations will likely see him miss Premier League action between 14th January and 5th February. Klopp told the :
“We watch the market all the time and of course we need to be prepared for different situations and one of them is injuries. The African Cup of Nations we already knew about so we don’t need to be influenced or surprised by that, but it could be a moment when we approach the market… When Sadio is away we will be without a winger. We do not have many wingers, I would say… It is a long way to go from January onwards and that month of January is busy… We need to be prepared for this for sure.”
One option may be Dortmund wideman Christian Pulisic, who was a target towards the end of the summer transfer window. However, there is a boost for the Reds as Joel Matip is likely to turn down a return to international football with Cameroon as he continues his self-imposed exile as he refuses to add to his 27 caps, meaning he will still be in action for the Reds.
Klopp was pleased by the superb display by his team over the weekend which saw them move to the top of the table as Manchester City and Arsenal both dropped points, but the German manager is keen to keep calm and ensure that players and fans do not get carried away, as he :
“When the result gives you the impression that it is easy there is a lot of hard work behind that. The result is wonderful and the performance is terrific. But Chelsea yesterday were not bad, Manchester City against Barcelona not bad, Arsenal have great movement and Tottenham – oh my god. We need to be good. Good results and performances help confidence, we will send the players all around the world and hopefully they come back healthy for a big challenge of Southampton. There is nothing to celebrate in the moment, this is our responsibility to play well when you put on the red of Liverpool, It is all good until now.”
Klopp is clearly keen to keep his players’ feet on the ground as he seeks to continue their fine form at the start of the campaign which has seen them climb to the top position for the first time since they surrendered the league title at the final hurdle in May 2014 under Brendan Rodgers.
One aspect of Klopp’s success over the past weeks, and in particular in victory over Watford, was the role of Emre Can who has scored in two consecutive games for the Reds. The German, who was signed for £9.75 million in 2014 from Bayer Leverkusen, has confirmed that the club are in talks with him over a new deal, :
“Yes, the club have spoken to my agent. The talks are going very good. I have one-and-a-half years left. I am still under contract and it is my agent’s work (to sort it out). I am very happy here at Liverpool.”
The 22-year-old has done well to adapt to a more advanced role than he was previously used to and is now showing just how important he can be for Klopp and his team.
