Unsung hero Joel Matip should keep his Liverpool place next season
Liverpool claimed the Champions League title on Saturday night with a comfortable 2-0 win over Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Mo Salah and Divock Origi secured the victory which handed boss Jurgen Klopp his first piece of silverware in English football.
It ended a superb campaign for the newly crowned Champions of Europe. The Reds finished with 97 points in the Premier League yet astonishingly were forced to settle for a second-place finish behind Manchester City.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Sadio Mane have earned the plaudits during the course of the campaign, but another defender has perhaps been equally as important.

Joel Matip has stood up to be counted since the turn of the year, proving an unsung hero for Klopp’s team. His superb assist for Origi’s goal on Saturday put the seal on an impressive run of personal form.
The Cameroonian fractured his collarbone in December and missed six games; including Liverpool’s only league defeat of the season against Manchester City.
Matip missed the end of last season with a hamstring problem and it was unsure what role, if any, he would play for Liverpool this season.
Alongside the impressive van Dijk, he has formed a formidable partnership and looks undroppable for next season.

With one-year left on his current deal, Matip’s form of late has been sufficient enough to suggest fresh terms might be forthcoming.
Whilst his team-mates have taken vast plaudits, Matip has quietly gone about his business, proving himself to be a more than capable performer.
