Liverpool have regularly scouted Schalke youngster Malick Thiaw

Liverpool have reportedly been scouting Schalke defender Malick Thiaw.

the Reds maintain regular contact with the defender through their scouts, having first been interested in him last year.

Liverpool have been linked with a host of names since Virgil van Dijk sustained ACL damage against Everton, including Thiaw’s Schalke teammate Ozan Kabak.

Thiaw has only recently come onto the scene in Germany, making his first-team debut for Schalke back in March of this year.

The 19-year-old, who was born in Dusseldorf but holds a Finnish passport, is thought to be the next top youngster to come through the club’s youth ranks, which have produced the likes of Manuel Neuer, Benedikt Höwedes, Ilkay Gündogan, Mesut Özil, Max Meyer, Julian Draxler and Leroy Sané previously.

The report from Sport Bild does not suggest a Liverpool bid will necessarily come, just that the club are keeping an eye on his progress.

TBR’s View – Thiaw one to watch

It remains to be seen if Liverpool decide to actually make a move for Thiaw – who has previously been likened to current Anfield star Joel Matip () – although it does seem an unlikely one.

Thiaw has not long been on the scene and has only made seven first-team appearances for Schalke to date.

With Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips both staking their claims for the club in recent games, it could be that the Reds don’t end up moving for anybody.
