Liverpool have just made first move to sign ‘very talented’ £38m player who’s ready to leave

After retracting their interest in Lille’s Leny Yoro, Liverpool have now made an enquiry to sign a centre-back who is admired across Europe.

Although Liverpool have been very quiet on the transfer front since Arne Slot’s arrival, things are now expected to pick up.

Richard Hughes recently admitted that the club are likely to be busier at the end of the window, once Slot has had adequate time to assess his squad.

For example, particularly in pursuit of a new centre-back, Slot wants to hand a chance to Sepp van de Berg in pre-season, who could still end up departing Anfield.

But given there are only six or so weeks left of the transfer window, Liverpool can’t simply wait and see – they’ll still be putting in the ground work right now.

And possibly alongside a winger, it still seems most likely that Slot’s side will try and recruit a new centre-back this summer.

Joel Matip is gone, Virgil van Dijk’s future is uncertain, and that then just leaves Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah as concrete long-term options.

Liverpool make approach to sign Mohamed Simakan who is ready to leave RB Leipzig

That being said, Liverpool have now submitted an enquiry for versatile RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan.

Plettenberg stated that both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are interested in a deal for ‘very talented’ Simakan, who could cost around €45m (£38m).

Leipzig want to keep the Frenchman, but Simakan is ‘open’ to a new challenge.

Plettenberg shared: “Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have enquired about Mohamed Simakan in the last days!

“Both clubs have gathered information. The 24 y/o central defender/right-back from RB Leipzig with a contract until 2027.

“Leipzig would like to keep him. But he’s not unsellable. Price valuation: €40m-€45m. Simakan is open for a new challenge with a top offer.”

Therefore it seems as if Liverpool could attempt to repeat their success in signing Konate from Leipzig back in 2021.

Of course, Simakan’s ability to perform as a right-back could also be important for Liverpool, given Trent Alexander-Arnold is interested in joining Real Madrid.

It’s shaping up to be an important summer for Liverpool, who need to either solve the contract situations of Van Dijk and Trent or begin to build elsewhere.
