Liverpool have an unlikely sympathiser following near PL title failure
The wait goes on for Liverpool in their hunt for a first Premier League title.
The Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on the final day, but couldn’t rely on Brighton to hold Manchester City, who won 4-1 at the Amex Stadium.
Liverpool finished the season on 97 points, frustratingly just one behind Pep Guardiola’s side.
In 25 of the previous 27 seasons, that tally would have landed them the title.
In short, there wasn’t an awful lot more Liverpool could have done to end their wait for English football’s top prize, but Jurgen Klopp can still bring the good times back to Anfield by masterminding a win against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final on June 1.
Liverpool have received plaudits from far and wide for their efforts this year, and one man who feels for the Reds over their near-miss, is Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.
The Blues boss endured similar heartbreak last term when his Napoli side finished on 91 points.
The remarkable tally was not enough to secure the Scudetto, with Juventus finishing as champions on 95.
Sarri said, : “Now I think of Jurgen Klopp. Because if you are able to gain 97 points in the Premier League without winning it is really very hard.
“I thought that I was unlucky in the last season because we arrived in second place with 91 and now I can understand very well the feeling of Klopp.”
TBR’s view
Sarri was certainly very unlucky last term not to win the Italian title and surely knows better than most just how Klopp must be feeling.
Trophies are an important measure of success in football, and although Klopp’s amazing work at Anfield is clear for all to see, silverware would truly help to validate and reaffirm everything.
