Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could be set for Bundesliga stay as Stuttgart plot summer transfer
According to the , Liverpool could be offered the chance to offload forgotten goalkeeper Loris Karius as VfB Stuttgart are plotting a summer transfer.
Karius has not featured for the Anfield natives when he calamitously gifted Real Madrid two goals, after throwing the ball at Karim Benzema before later fumbling a hopeful 30-yard attempt from Gareth Bale.
The German had opened all 13 of Liverpool’s UEFA fixtures that season after regaining the number one jersey from Simon Mignolet, but his errors proved costly as the Reds lost 3-1.
Liverpool have sent Karius out on loan for each of the past three seasons after spending £67million () on Alisson in 2018, with the 27-year-old currently at Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin after terminating a two-year deal with Besiktas last May ().
Karius left the Turkish Super Lig giants following a dispute over unpaid wages, but has failed to establish himself in the German capital with just across all competitions – starting four – in which he has conceded four goals and kept three clean sheets.
Yet Stuttgart are thought to be weighing up a return to the Mercedes-Benz Arena for Karius, who started his career in Die Roten’s academy but before joining Manchester City’s youth set up in 2009.
Liverpool’s asking price for Karius is not claimed, with a fee likely to be needed as the £4.7m () signing from 1.FSV Mainz 05 is still under contract for another year on the £25,000-per-week () contract signed upon his arrival in 2016.
TBR’s view:
Liverpool will no doubt be hopeful of a suitor making an approach for Karius at the end of the season, in order to free themselves of the final year of his contract and avoid losing the goalkeeper for nothing in 12 months’ time.
It obviously remains to be seen, however, if any side is willing to pay a moderate sum for the German, having been nothing more than the back-up option at Union Berlin this season, but the Bundesliga outfit have of title winners Bayern Munich.
Only four Bundesliga sides have a than Stuttgart, though, including the already relegated FC Schalke 04 and 1.FC Koln, with Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side conceding 53 times in 33 games entering the final weekend of the season.
Die Roten may, therefore, be more open to signing Karius, who kept career Bundesliga appearances with Mainz, once his Union Berlin deal expires, and offer Liverpool the chance they will certainly like to offload a clearly unwanted player.
