Liverpool fans react to Nat Phillips’ performance in West Ham win

Liverpool have secured a 2-1 win over a resolute West Ham United at Anfield. Diogo Jota scored the winning goal after a wonderful pass from Xherdan Shaqiri to secure the win. It came after Mohamed Salah’s penalty had levelled the scoring after Pablo Fornals’ opener for the visitors on Merseyside. Liverpool also had a goal disallowed by VAR after Sadio Mane was adjusted to have fouled both Lukasz Fabianski and Angelo Ogbonna for another Jota finish.

But it was not the action at the attacking end of the pitch that many Liverpool fans took notice of. Instead it was their defensive work, amid the club’s current defensive shortage.

The Reds are without virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho due to injury and Jurgen Klopp sprung a surprise by giving Nat Phillips his chance in the Premier League.

Liverpool had expected to sell Phillips, or at least sent him on loan, this summer so therefore did not include him in their Champions League squad.

With that in mind, Phillips got the chance in the domestic competition, with Rhys Williams likely to return for midweek against Atalanta.

But Liverpool fans were not left disappointed by the 23-year-old’s performance. Up against the imposing Sebatien Haller, Phillips performed admirably and did not look out of place in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Strong in the air and comfortable in possession Phillips, whose current Liverpool deal expires next summer, was solid throughout and some Liverpool fans even wondered if he was the experienced one out of the defensive duo, with Joe Gomez having a few ropey moments.
