Liverpool fans react to Joel Matip display vs Chelsea

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Joel Matip after the defender’s display in the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

Both the Reds and Thomas Tuchel’s men remain unbeaten so far this term. That is after the two sides shared the points at Anfield.

The Blues took the lead through Kai Havertz. But Liverpool were level just before the break after Mohamed Salah’s penalty.

Of course, the pivotal battle ahead of the game looked set to be the duel between Virgil van Dijk and Romelu Lukaku, particularly after the latter’s stunning debut last weekend.

But many of the Reds fans on social media felt that van Dijk did not have any reason to worry about Lukaku – and that was because of Matip.

Several have lauded the 30-year-old for his display in the draw. Only Harvey Elliott completed a greater number of accurate passes on either side ().

Meanwhile, no Liverpool player won more tackles. He also topped the charts for aerial duels won on either team. Crucially, Lukaku won one fewer.

Matip has made an outstanding start to the campaign. Many Liverpool fans were full of praise for his performance against Norwich on the opening weekend of the season.

And he continues to impress. Several insisted that he is proving to be one of the league’s best defenders this term. They are desperately hoping that he can enjoy a little more luck with injury as he looks to be in brilliant form right now.
