Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Rhys Williams’s Champions League display
A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to laud Rhys Williams’s performance as the Reds put one foot in the knockout stages of the Champions League with another win.
Williams had appeared in both of Liverpool’s two previous group-stage games. But Tuesday saw the 19-year-old make his full debut in the competition as Jurgen Klopp’s men faced Atalanta.

The Italians are the second-highest scorers in Serie A so far this term. And before this week, they were the highest scorers in their group, with six goals in their first two fixtures.
Ultimately, fans expecting a high-scoring game would not have been disappointed. But it was not a close game as Liverpool ran out 5-0 winners.

Diogo Jota will take many of the headlines for a superb hat-trick. But many felt compelled to heap praise on Williams for his contribution in the emphatic victory.
, he won a couple of challenges. James Milner and Joe Gomez were the only Liverpool players to win more. He also made three clearances.
But perhaps the best compliment Williams could receive is the fact that he did not look out of place at all on Europe’s biggest stage. He has been a revelation in the competition so far.
Many feared how Liverpool would cope without Virgil van Dijk. There is, unfortunately, a long way to go before he is back. And there will be plenty of hurdles to overcome.
But his injury has presented Williams with an opportunity. And it is clear that many of the fans believe that he is making the most of his chance.
Here is how some of the supporters reacted to the youngster’s display…
My Man of the Match
Rhys Williams
Imagine playing for Kidderminster and not getting a look in at LFC to appearing in the Champions League, he not put a foot wrong in any game he’s played, hardly any 1st team experience, that’s immense

Whatever happens in their futures, you cannot take away from Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams that they played in big games for a title winning Liverpool side and looked absolutely boss.
Credit to them both and that can never be taken away from them.

How good was Rhys Williams tonight. First champions league start and was solid

Turns out Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are both world class

Rhys Williams 🔥 going from playing National League to smashing it in Champions League 3 appearances 3 clean sheets
— Sir Hendo LFC 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (@LFCSirHendo)
I can’t believe Rhys Williams was playing in the National League North with Kidderminster last season. He’s literally come out of nowhere and has already played his part this season. Only 19 years old, well done!

Rhys Williams has just saved LFC £40 mill in the transfer market in January.

The front 3 were the stars but I thought Gomez and Williams were fantastic tonight
— Josh (@LFCJosh23)
Outstanding performance tonight. Obviously the plaudits will go to Jota but I thought Hendo, Jones and Williams did a brilliant job tonight. Alisson back to his best too!

Rhys Williams may well be the real deal… 19 years old and was ridiculously calm. Looks confident, as does the entire team. Front three look frightening as per usual, and can now add in Jota/Shaq/Taki and still have Thiago to come back as well 😍😍

Rhys Williams. Wow. Machine
