Liverpool fans react as Xherdan Shaqiri shines on Lyon debut, gets an assist
Xherdan Shaqiri starred for Lyon in his debut for the club on Sunday evening, a 3-1 win over Strasbourg – and Liverpool fans have reacted.
Shaqiri, 29, ended a three-year stint at Liverpool towards the end of the summer window to move to Lyon – having only clocked up 66 outings.
Injuries hampered his momentum, and a lack of momentum meant irregular game time. All in all, it contributed to Shaqiri leaving Liverpool.
He completed a move to Lyon and has finally made his debut. The international break, obviously, came first.
Ex-Ajax and Dortmund boss Peter Bosz handed Shaqiri a start, and he lasted 75 minutes – laying on an assist as Lyon beat Strasbourg 3-1 at home.
In the video below, it shows his immediate connection with fans. They chanted his name, as he took a short corner, creating Jason Denayer’s goal.
What are Liverpool fans saying as Shaqiri produces Lyon assist?
It is not as if Liverpool are lacking in depth. But there has always been a decent proportion of Liverpool fans of the belief Shaqiri was underused.
The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and more can offer the Reds width. Harvey Elliott too, before his dislocated ankle.
Had Elliott suffered the injury before the end of the window, Liverpool might have kept Shaqiri. Takumi Minamino might come back into the fold.
But seeing Shaqiri shine for new side Lyon will be a source of frustration for some Liverpool fans. Some, meanwhile, applauded Shaqiri for his debut.
