Liverpool fans react as Taiwo Awoniyi scores for Mainz as Bundesliga returns
Taiwo Awoniyi played the role as super sub for Mainz as the Liverpool loanee sparked two-goal comeback to earn a point away at FC Koln – and Reds supporters reacted on Twitter to his strike for the Bundesliga outfit.
Awoniyi, 22, is currently enjoying his sixth loan spell away from Liverpool at Mainz since joining the Reds in the summer of 2015. He has enjoyed spells with Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron twice, KAA Gent and now Mainz.
Yet to make a senior Liverpool bow, the seven-time Nigeria Under-23 international was handed the chance to impress in Germany’s top tier this season after scoring 14 goals last term for Belgian outfit Mouscron.

He has hardly had the best of times with Mainz, but came on during Sunday’s 2-2 draw to find the back of the net in just his seventh appearance for the German club – and netting what is his first goal for Mainz.
A well-worked move from Mainz saw Bote Baku get in behind the Koln defence, and Awoniyi was on hand to tap home, halving the deficit to just one. Mainz scored a second to earn a point through Pierre Kunde.
Awoniyi has a contract at Anfield until the summer of 2023 and Liverpool supporters caught wind of the attacker’s goal on Sunday afternoon – with many applauding their loanee.
