Liverpool fans pay tribute to Fernando Torres as he announces his retirement
Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football
The Spaniard enjoyed a hugely successful career at club and international level, also turning out for boyhood Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Spain among others.
He : “I have something very important to announce. After 18 exciting years, the time has come to put an end to my football career. Next Sunday, the 23rd at 10:00AM, local time in Japan, I will have a press conference in Tokyo to explain all the details. See you there.”
In truth, Torres was never quite the same player after leaving Anfield for Chelsea in 2011, with injuries creating a loss of form and confidence he didn’t recover from.

At Liverpool, he was truly devastating, forming an incredible partnership with Steven Gerrard and frequently terrorising Manchester United – and in particular Nemanja Vidic – in a way that no other striker of the era could manage.
So despite the way he left for Chelsea, many Liverpool fans are now able to pay tribute to the former Red and wish him all the best in his retirement.
Fernando Torres was unplayable at Liverpool. His link up play with Gerrard was some of the best I've seen.
Such a shame how it ended at . In a different time, he could've gone on to be a legend of the club.
Retires with a cabinet full of winners medals 👏🏼

Fernando Torres has retired from professional football today. One of my childhood hero’s going up. Torres could win games on his own sometimes and we worshiped the ground he walked on. Hope he enjoys a long and a healthy retirement

sad your career has ended but thanks El Niño you were one of the greatest strikers to have played for Liverpool. Will never forget the Arsenal or Marseille goals shame we couldn’t win a trophy together but the memories will last forever. Wish you good fortune YNWA

Torres in Red was absolutely breathtaking. Him bearing down on goal, golden locks flowing as his Iberian prancing feet dazzled defences and left goalies rooted like a renaissance statue. Simply magnificent. But he broke my heart… a bit of me still loves Nando tho

A painful exit but a great player for . Prime was unbelievable on his day & as good as anyone to have pulled on that red shirt. Happy retirement, El Niño.

He broke my heart massively when he left, but when he wore the shirt, he was the best striker in the world. Congrats on your retirement

Fernando Torres. He gave me some outstanding highs, especially when he mugged off Vidic, but gave me one of my greatest heartbreaks when he left. Enjoy your retirement
