Liverpool fans discuss £75m price tag placed on Barcelona midfielder’s head

Barcelona have reportedly placed a £75million price tag on Frenkie de Jong’s head following the arrival of Xavi. The Dutch midfielder was brought to the club by former manager Ernesto Valverde for £65million. But with Xavi now in charge, he could go – and Liverpool fans have responded.

Joining the club in the summer of 2019, de Jong has since clocked up 106 appearances for Barcelona – having a hand in 23 goals from midfield. He was crucial to Barcelona under Ronald Koeman but ultimately, Barca failed under the Dutch boss. A new era is about to take shape at the Nou Camp.

Like many clubs, a new manager is set to take to the dugout this weekend and Xavi is an example – returning to Barcelona after leaving as a player. But it appears that a decision Xavi has already made is to sell de Jong, despite his regularity in the starting XI. He will cost £75million.

The 36-time Netherlands international is a player that is likely to attract interest. – as per Spanish outlet El Chiringuito – that de Jong will be sold for £75million, with Manchester City interested in signing him. City are likely to want a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Why Liverpool need to beat Manchester City and sign de Jong?

Manchester City, as stated, do need a midfielder. One that can play as a progressive, box-to-box player – but one that can also sit in front of the defence and keep the tempo high. De Jong is ideal, able to do both and even contribute to the attack if needed to get up the pitch.

His passing, stamina, dribbling with the ball and ability to glide past opponents does seriously catch the eye. But surely, that is exactly what Liverpool need – after losing Gini Wijnaldum in the summer on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds are light in midfield.

Thiago is being linked with a return to Barcelona with Xavi in charge. Naby Keita’s form is incredibly up and down, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is arguably a bit too attacking at times. James Milner is out of contract at the end of the season, and at 34, it is unlikely he will get a new contract.

What are Liverpool fans saying about reports regarding de Jong?

So, Liverpool need a midfielder. But what de Jong brings to the table as a midfielder is something the Reds lack. As stated, his dribbling from deep and ability to go past players is not really associated with the likes of Jordan Henderson or Fabinho. At 24, he could be future of the Reds midfield.

Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to the reports that de Jong could leave Barcelona in the coming transfer windows – possibly as early as January. At £75million, many Reds fans think he would be worth spending big on in the coming weeks and months. Some suggested a Thiago swap.
