Liverpool fans couldn’t believe Shaqiri’s instant impact in Manchester United victory

When last season’s Anfield clash between Liverpool and Manchester United was heading for a 0-0 draw, Jurgen Klopp was either unwilling or unable to alter the complexion of the match from the bench.

A series of like for like changes saw the game fizzle out but the Reds could not afford a similar outcome in yesterday’s clash; the competition from Manchester City is too intense to allow for that.

But a summer of investment has granted Klopp the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri to introduce to change the course of games, allowing Liverpool to push forward even more in search of another vital win.

The Swiss playmaker decided the match, rattling home two strikes, albeit both via a deflection, following his introduction in place of Naby Keita.

That further underlines the difference between this season’s Liverpool and the last; they have the depth, courage and quality to win games late on.

Shaqiri has been a brilliant cut-price addition, liberated from bearing the entire creative burden at Stoke and working exceptionally hard to integrate himself into Klopp’s preferred pressing game.
