Liverpool face Newcastle United transfer battle for ‘phenomenon’ defender after Sepp van den Berg sale

Newcastle United are in the market for a new centre back in the final stages of the transfer window and could move for one Liverpool target.

The Magpies saw Fabian Schar pick up a straight red card against Southampton, which is just about the last thing Eddie Howe needed.

Newcastle are already without two centre backs with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman long-term absentees.

A new centre back has been a top priority with Newcastle targeting a move for Marc Guehi but signing the Crystal Palace ace won’t be easy.

Newcastle also looked at Malick Thiaw but speculation surrounding the AC Milan defender has cooled off in recent weeks.

Newcastle United want Mohamed Simakan

The Magpies have started to eye up alternatives to Guehi with Palace playing hardball.

Newcastle are interested in Chelsea’s Axel Disasi whilst Blues teammate Trevoh Chalobah is on the Magpies radar.

Paul Mitchell and co may look a little further afield though with Bundesliga defenders wanted.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsobia has been eyed but the now claim that Newcastle want Mohamed Simakan.

It’s stated that the RB Leipzig defender is ‘of interest’ inside Newcastle as a potential signing before next week’s transfer deadline.

Simakan spent most of his time last season playing as a centre back but has often played at right back for RB Leipzig.

That versatility may appeal to Newcastle, with Simakan providing more flexibility than players such as Guehi and Disasi.

Hailed as a ‘phenomenon’ by former Strasbourg coach Francois Keller, as quoted by the , Simakan is still only 24 and should still have room to develop in the Premier League.

Liverpool lurking for Simakan

Sky Germany reporter claimed this week that Liverpool are interested in signing Simakan this summer.

The Reds may be in the market for another defender this summer and have a strong history of signing former Red Bull players.

Ibrahima Konate, Naby Keita, Takumi Minamino, Dominik Szoboszlai and Sadio Mane have all featured in the Red Bull system.

Simakan is on their radar too, so we could see a Liverpool v Newcastle transfer battle before next week’s transfer deadline.

Liverpool surely need to sell a couple of defenders first though with interest mounting.

Sepp van den Berg has now completed a move to Brentford but Joe Gomez’s future must still be resolved.

If Gomez follows Van den Berg out of Anfield, don’t be surprised to see Liverpool firm up that interest in Simakan and rival Newcastle for his signature.
