Liverpool could do something in January they haven’t done in 23 years as they plot £70m transfer
Liverpool endured a quiet summer transfer window as Arne Slot refrained from making wholesale changes to his squad.
Federico Chiesa was the only player who came through the door at Anfield, while the Reds also agreed a deal in principle to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia in the summer of 2025.
Liverpool have usually kept their cards close to their chest in terms of transfers, making them a tough nut to crack.
However, as we edge closer to the January transfer window, reports suggest they could make a transfer that could send shockwaves across English football.
Liverpool ‘firm admirers’ of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

According to the , the Reds are keeping tabs on Jarrad Branthwaite and could feasibly move for him in January.
Everton demanded in excess of £70m for the defender in the summer when Manchester United tried to sign him and are expected to quote a similar fee if Liverpool – or other clubs – knock on their door for him.

However, with Braithwaite’s contract running out in the summer of 2027 and the Englishman unlikely to sign a new deal at the club, it remains to be seen what happens if Liverpool launch a move for him.
With Manchester United believed to be out of the running after splashing the cash on Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, Liverpool could have a free run at the player in the upcoming transfer windows.
Losing Branthwaite to Liverpool will be catastrophic for Everton
The last time Liverpool signed a player directly from Everton was way back in 2002 when they snapped up Portuguese defender Abel Xavier.
It is another defender who has emerged on the Reds’ radar this time around, but with Everton demanding more than £70m and the obvious history between the two clubs, any potential transfer is likely to take a lot of time and deliberation from all parties involved.

Liverpool have shown in the past that they wouldn’t refrain from splashing the cash on special talents and judging by their evaluation of Branthwaite, he appears to fall in that category.
That said, Michael Edwards will have to play an absolute blinder to convince the Reds’ arch-rivals to sell arguably their biggest asset to them.
