Jurgen Klopp delivers injury update on Naby Keita, with Atletico Madrid clash looming for Liverpool

Liverpool have been rocked by the news that Naby Keita is facing a spell on the sidelines. , the midfielder will be sent for a scan after hobbling out of Saturday’s draw with Brighton.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has also told thethat he can’t see him being fit to play against Atletico Madrid in midweek.

Prior to the contest with the Seagulls, Keita was deemed fit to play. He lasted just 20 minutes though and now faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of his latest problem.

Keita can’t catch a break. He arrived at Liverpool in 2018 from RB Leipzig and was expected to be an exciting player capable of taking the Premier League by storm.

Injuries have hampered his progress considerably. He has made 86 appearances for the Reds, scoring

The frustrating thing about this particular setback is that it comes when he’s playing well. He had stepped into the void left by Gini Wijnaldum and had scored three times in 10 outings during 2021/22.

Now, the 26-year-old looks set for another spell out of action. Klopp won’t be happy, with his midfield ranks already looking somewhat depleted.

Harvey Elliott is injured, whilst James Milner is also nursing a small problem. The typically dependable Fabinho has also found himself out of action this season.

Thiago looks ready to return, although he will need some time to get up to speed. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be the main beneficiary of Keita’s latest injury, with Atletico Madrid due at Anfield in midweek.

Could Liverpool make a surprise call in midfield with Keita absent?

Trent Alexander-Arnold has often been touted as a player who could come into the midfield engine room and why not try it now.

Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones are the only fit midfielders, although Thiago is working his way back to full fitness.

Now could be the time to experiment and see how Alexander-Arnold gets on as a central midfielder.

His array of passing is superb whilst he has a decent footballing brain. He perhaps wouldn’t have the tenacity defensively as Keita but he could still prove capable of doing a job.
