3 young guns who could become Carabao Cup heroes for Liverpool
Liverpool completed a 5-2 demolition of Everton last night to maintain their eight-point advantage at the summit of the Premier League.
The Reds were indebted to Divock Origi, who scored a brace, Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were at their devastating best going forward and the title looks within their grasp.
Liverpool have today named their 23-man squad to make the trip over to Qatar for the Club World Championships later this month.
One surprising aspect of the announcement is the number of youngsters named. Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott, Neco Williams and Curtis Jones will all be on the flight to Qatar.
Liverpool under-23 boss Neil Critchley will oversee a Carabao Cup game with Aston Villa around the same time and it was anticipated that several fringe players would stay in the UK and play at Villa Park.
Following today’s squad reveal we look at three players who will be hoping to make a name for themselves during the Carabao Cup game later this month:
Herbie Kane
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan in League One with Doncaster but stayed at Anfield for the 2019/20 season.
Kane has captained the under-23 side on occasions this season and he could do the same when Critchley takes charge against Aston Villa.
This season he has played seven under-23 games, scoring two goals and registering two assists.
He did make an appearance at MK Dons in round three of the Carabao Cup and he will hope to impress when Liverpool return to cup action later this month.
Typically an attacking midfielder, Kane will hope to throw himself into the shop window ahead of a possible loan in January.
Pedro Chirivella
The 22-year-old could line-up alongside Kane in the Liverpool midfield and unlike many other under-23 players he does have first-team appearances to his name.
A former Spain under-17 international, he has seven first-team games under his belt and played nine minutes against Arsenal in the previous round of the Carabao Cup.
Chirivella is another well-respected member of the development ranks. He is strong in the tackle, moves the ball well and boasts bags of energy.
The Spaniard will see his contract expire in the summer and he is quickly running out of chances to impress.
Sepp van den Berg
Perhaps a surprise omission from the party that will board a flight to Qatar, the Dutch defender is tipped for a bright future.
The 17-year earned two first-team outings in the Carabao Cup earlier this season and will hope to earn another chance against Villa.
The teenager signed from PEC Zwolle in the summer for £1.3 million and he could eventually cost the Reds £4.4 million
The squad that travel to Villa Park will be vastly inexperienced. The game could represent the perfect chance for van den Berg to prove he can make the step up to men’s football.
He arrived at Anfield with a glowing reputation and he will want to showcase his talents to his boss once more against Premier League opposition.
