Liverpool are interested in ‘phenomenal’ midfielder who Kenny Dalglish described as an ‘absolute steal’

Liverpool still find themselves awaiting their first signing of the summer transfer window with pre-season really beginning to pick up pace.

Arne Slot has now been through the doors on Merseyside for a number of weeks but is still in search of his first new signing.

The Reds face a lot of uncertainty this season on the back of Jurgen Klopp’s exit from Anfield at the end of the campaign.

But Liverpool have been able to retain the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah so far which will provide fans with optimism for things to come under Slot.

Summer additions would be welcomed, though, as Liverpool see some of their rivals begin to make some moves in the market.

However, there is one player who Liverpool are now showing interest in which would please the club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool rivaling European clubs to signature of midfielder

There has not been in much of the way when it comes to departures from Anfield, either.

Liverpool have not seen any players sold with the likes of Joel Matip leaving following the conclusion of his contract.

Another big name to depart – and then retire – is Thiago Alcantara who will leave a big hole in terms of experience in the dressing room.

Although Liverpool may struggle to replace his experience, they find themselves looking to replace him as a number in their midfield department.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Liverpool are well informed on the situation of the Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was the man to bring the Danish midfielder to Glasgow back in 2022.

But it is not just Liverpool who are showing an interest in O’Riley with the likes of Atalanta and Atletico Madrid also credited in the post.

O’Riley is currently playing under the watch of former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers who has hailed the 23-year-old as simply ‘‘.

What Kenny Dalglish previously said about Matt O’Riley

O’Riley has now been playing his football at Parkhead for over two years now where he has been able to rack up 121 appearances.

In those games, O’Riley has provided the Bhoys with 27 goals and 34 assists and has clearly attracted the interest of clubs across Europe.

And he is a player who has really impressed the former Liverpool and Celtic man, Dalglish.

“Matt O’Riley played his part and his one-touch pass to put the Japanese striker through was as good a ball as you’ll see this season,” Dalglish told the late last year.

“I believe he cost in the region of £1.5 million from MK Dons, which is an absolute steal. He has matured and his game has improved. At 22, there is still plenty more to come and he appears to be thriving under Brendan. It was good business to tie him down on a long-term contract.”
