Liverpool and Everton stars Robertson and Digne show they’re the gold standard
Yesterday’s pulsating Merseyside Derby finished 2-2 at Goodison Park, with Liverpool unable to reduce the gap at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds thought they had won it at the death through Jordan Henderson, but Sadio Mane was controversially adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.
The spoils were shared, and the three-point gap between the teams remains.
There has been a lot of talk about the offside decision, and also the Jordan Pickford challenge which has seemingly left Virgil van Dijk facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
But something that hasn’t really been spoken much about amid the chaos is just how good two players in particular.
Specifically, two players playing the same position.
Andy Robertson and Lucas Digne were both excellent during the game and once again showed why they are very much the gold standard when it comes to Premier League left-backs.
TBR’s View – Robertson and Digne in a class of their own
Both players were heavily involved for their respective teams.
£100,000-a-week star Robertson () laid on the assist for Sadio Mane’s opener and then in the second half, in the same area of the pitch, Digne delivered for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to nod home Everton’s second.
Scotland international Robertson has been at the top of his game for a couple of years now, and his assist for Mane was, amazingly, his ninth goal contribution in his last 13 Premier League appearances since Project Restart.
Although maybe he could have been stronger against Calvert-Lewin on Everton’s goal, there’s just no doubting the 27-year-old’s incredible consistency in both attacking and defensive phases.
Digne – who cost the Toffees a reported £18 million () – got seven assists last term, and has two already in 2020/21, suggesting he is going toe-to-toe with Robertson on the attacking front at least.
Fans of each team will obviously back their own man in a question of who is better, but right now it’s hard to think of any other left-backs who come close to the pair in terms of what they offer for Liverpool and Everton.
