Liverpool: £22million forward linked; bid for winger rejected; conflicting reports on Matip
The Italian newspaper believe that Liverpool are set to join Juventus and Inter Milan in the race for Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi. The 22-year-old can play anywhere in a front three, although he prefers a place on the right, and has scored seven goals in eight games this season despite a knee injury disrupting his progress.
The battle for the Italian could be tough though, with Juventus reportedly benefiting from a £22 million option to buy the winger. Given how clearly he would fit into the Liverpool attack, it may be worth the club’s effort to try to beat the Turin team to his signature.
The club are keen to protect themselves for the rest of the season though, as can be seen in the ‘s claims that Jurgen Klopp has refused to allow 19-year-old Sheyi Ojo to depart the club on loan after an offer from former boss Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United in the Championship.
Ojo missed much of the first half of the season with a serious back injury but is now back on the first team scene and Klopp reportedly sees him as a key option from the bench with little depth in forward positions and a host of fixtures in both the league and the cup in the next few weeks.
As FIFA begin an investigation into the availability of Joel Matip, the believe that the Cameroonian, who retired from internationals several years ago, could miss up to six games as the club versus country row goes on with Cameroon whilst they are at the African Cup of Nations.
However, the report that the club are going to take the risk of playing Matip in Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay against League 2 Plymouth Argyle as they believe that they have provided all of the necessary evidence to FIFA to ensure that he should be available for selection as senior figures grow frustrated with FIFA’s incompetence.
