Liverpool 20-year-old wants to become ‘even better than Virgil van Dijk’

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has outlined his ambitions to become “even better than Virgil van Dijk”.

The 20-year-old joined the Anfield academy in the summer of 2019.

Liverpool paid Zwolle £1.3million – potentially rising to £4.4milion – to bring the then 17-year-old to Anfield.

Van den Berg arrived at Liverpool as one of the most highly rated youngsters in Dutch football.

He’s progressing very well, becoming a regular starter on loan at Championship outfit Preston.

Liverpool sent Van den Berg out on loan in January this year, making 16 league appearances last term.

In summer, the Reds and the Lilywhites extended his temporary stay for a further 12 months.

Meanwhile, Van Dijk has become the benchmark as far as world-class defenders go.

And speaking to Dutch newspaper , Van den Berg said he wants to become better than his compatriot.

“My dream is a starting place at Liverpool and the Netherlands senior team,” said Van der Berg, per .

“I also hope to become even better than Virgil van Dijk.

“I know: with that I set the bar high.

“But I think you should always dream and think big.”

Credit to Van den Berg for showing so much ambition.

He’s clearly confident and, the way he’s been progressing, seems to have what it takes to become a top defender.
