Liverpool 2-2 West Ham: Three things we learnt
When Adam Lallana opened the scoring in the fifth minute at Anfield, it looked like this tie could only be going one way as the power of Liverpool’s attack blew away an already fragile West Ham defence who had not only been on the receiving end of a thrashing against Arsenal last weekend, but who had also dropped into the relegation zone after Swansea beat Sunderland.
That was not to be the case though, as the Hammers picked up their performance. Lallana was at fault as he tripped Dimitri Payet, who stepped up to curl a free-kick through the wall and low into the net, beating Loris Karius in the process, to bring the Irons back level.
The shock came minutes later, just before half time, when a hopeful ball from Mark Noble deflected off the head of Jordan Henderson to catch out Joel Matip and allow Michail Antonio to capitalise to round Loris Karius and pass the ball into an empty net to give the east London team the lead.
Liverpool came back fighting in the second half, with Divock Origi not hesitating to pounce on a goalkeeping error from Darren Randolph to smash the ball into the back of the net to draw the scores level. Neither side could find a winning goal in what was a tight encounter, with Liverpool dominating the second half chances but never looking like they were close to scoring.
