Linked with Rangers in summer, German free agent is reportedly in talks with English side
Steven Gerrard was very active in the transfer window for a second successive summer as Rangers manager, spending big on the likes of Filip Helander and Ryan Kent – but the club were also linked with a German free agent.
at the start of the summer window that Rangers wanted to sign 29-year-old Germany international Lewis Holtby after his contract expired at Hamburger SV – who failed to gain promotion from the second tier last season.
It saw Holtby opt to leave the club on a free transfer but the former Tottenham star failed to find a new club. The initial reported interest in Holtby was never acted upon, with Gerrard instead signing the likes of Joe Aribo and Andy King.
Now, it appears Holtby could be on his way to these shores but down south. Holtby is in talks with English Championship club Blackburn Rovers – and it is clear he could sign a contract sooner rather than later.
Should Rangers regret not signing Holtby?
Simple answer, yes. Holtby is renowned for not only his work rate, but his ability score from deep – which is proven in both the Bundesliga and in the Premier League. Creative, tough and a leader after captaining Hamburg – he is an excellent player.
At Scottish Premiership level, there is no doubt that Holtby would impress. On a free, it seems a no brainer – but it could be that Holtby is requesting quite substantial wages to move. If he impresses at Blackburn, Rangers should regret avoiding him.
