Liam Cooper lauds Kiko Casilla after Leeds win over Bristol City

Liam Cooper has admitted that he was absolutely delighted for Kiko Casilla after Leeds United kept a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Bristol City on Saturday, .

It has been a difficult period for Casilla. And he left many of the supporters stunned in disbelief in midweek with a terrible blunder in the 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Plenty asked for Illan Meslier to get a chance. But Marcelo Bielsa kept his faith in the Spaniard for the clash with the Robins this weekend.

It is difficult to say that Casilla vindicated Bielsa’s decision. In truth, Leeds dominated against Lee Johnson’s side and will have been disappointed to only win 1-0. Casilla was left with little to do.

But Casilla largely did what was needed with minimal fuss. There was a shaky moment or two in there. But given the torrid conditions, he may have taken a lot of confidence from the result.

And Cooper suggested that he was over the moon to help Casilla keep the ball out of the net in what appears to be a potentially huge victory for Leeds.

“I’m delighted for him, absolutely delighted for him,” he said, .

“He’s come in for a bit of stick. He’s a confident lad. That clean sheet was for him.

“He deserves it. He never changes the way he plays and he’s a great lad. We’re absolutely buzzing for him.

“We do our jobs, we stick together through thick and thin. We’re an honest bunch and if one messes up, another one will bail him out. That’s the way it’s got to be. We’ve got a real togetherness and a great group of lads. We’ll fight to the end.”

If Leeds see the best of Casilla during the remaining months of the season, it could make a huge difference for the Whites.

The former Real Madrid man was outstanding during the early stages of the campaign. He had a real point to prove after a calamitous end to last season.

And with another point to prove this time around, the Elland Road faithful will be hoping that Casilla can use the clean sheet to turn a corner.
