‘Let him sit there’: Van der Vaart tells CL club to snub January move for Tottenham man

Rafael van der Vaart has urged Ajax not to sign Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window.
Spurs only signed the Dutch speedster in January last year. He started off his Tottenham career with a fantastic goal against Manchester City, but he hasn’t quite been able to build on that since.
Bergwijn has played 62 times for Spurs so far, but he has only scored four goals. Since Antonio Conte’s arrival, he has been given just 13 minutes of game time, which is simply not enough. That is why he has been heavily linked with a move to Dutch giants Ajax.
However, Van der Vaart, who has played for both Ajax and Tottenham, has urged Erik ten Hag’s side to ‘let him sit’ at Spurs beyond the end of the January transfer window.
Van der Vaart: Ajax should not sign Tottenham ace Bergwijn
The retired Dutchman said on last night: “He (Bergwijn) is a wonderful player. I like to watch him. You can never guarantee a player that he will play, but if you bring Bergwijn from Tottenham to Ajax, he has to play.
“The next question is then only where he will play? You have Tadic in his position and on the right, you have Antony and Berghuis. So, they only get Bergwijn because Haller is going to the Africa Cup for a month? I don’t think Bergwijn should want that.
“From Ajax’s perspective, I understand it, but I wouldn’t think it wise for Bergwijn. He still plays regularly at Tottenham and if you go to Ajax and then sit on the bench in the Dutch competition, that is not good for your career. That wouldn’t be better for him. He also occasionally plays at Tottenham, so let him sit there.”

TBR View:
It is pretty clear at this point that Bergwijn has no future at Tottenham. Conte prefers his wing-backs to make full use of the wide areas, and the likes of Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura cut in and have more of an impact centrally.
It’s not that Bergwijn can’t do what Son and Lucas are being asked to do, but Conte prefers them over the Dutchman. That is a clear sign for the ex-PSV man to consider his options, and Ajax would be a great club for him.
However, if ten Hag and Marc Overmars listen to van der Vaart’s advice, Bergwijn may just have to find a different club next month.
