Leon Osman lauds ‘great’ David Moyes for orchestrating ‘tremendous’ West Ham season
BBC Sport pundit Leon Osman has come to the defence of David Moyes and lauded the West Ham United manager for orchestrating a ‘tremendous’ European push this season.
The former Everton midfielder, who played under Moyes at Goodison Park, feels the Hammers boss earns unfair criticism for his ability, as the Scot is a top Premier League level head coach.
Osman is adamant that Moyes has displayed those credential this term by guiding the Irons from a fight for survival last season, to being on the cusp of securing a place in the Europa League by avoiding defeat at home to Southampton on Sunday.
West Ham also spent time in fourth place and were contending with Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester City for a spot in the Champions League, are guaranteed to end the season above Arsenal in the Premier League table and could finish ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
Osman is not surprised to see West Ham positioned so well given Moyes’ position at the helm, and has backed his former head coach to get the Irons over the European hurdle.
“It’s been a tremendous season for West Ham considering where they were last season,” Osman told (19/5, 22:22). “David Moyes came in and he has started to get the club to where they want to be.
“People always seem to question David Moyes and his ability, but he is a great Premier League football manager. He knows how to win games, and it is no surprise to see West Ham in the European positions.”
TBR’s view:
Moyes enjoyed a solid first tenure at West Ham during the latter half of the 2017/18 season, to turn around a side that had won just fixtures under Slaven Bilic and sat 18th in the table to one that finished 13th with wins over Chelsea, Leicester and Everton.
He returned in similar fashion last term with Manuel Pellegrini sacked after left the Irons one point above the relegation zone, and has turned around a side that would stave of relegation boasting the in 19/20 to now be on the cusp of European qualification.
If Moyes , continues to offload those he and is given the backing to add a few players to key positions in the summer, the signs would suggest he can maintain West Ham’s position and build a promising future.
