Leif Davis’ latest injury came at exactly the wrong time

If there was one position where Leeds United have looked weakest this season it has possibly been at left-back.

Barry Douglas was brought in to solve the club’s left-back issues in 2018. Unfortunately, injuries have severely detrimented his Elland Road impact.

Ezgjan Alioski has moved into the position from his wide attacking role. Whilst he has, on the whole, been good enough his defensive attributes do occasionally let him down.

Stuart Dallas has also filled in the role, but given his brilliant form this season, it has been a waste of his talents.

But there was definitely an opening in the role this season and that’s why, for the second season in a row, Leif Davis has been left extremely unlucky.

Marcelo Bielsa clearly rates the youngster. The ‘very good Davis’ video has gone viral amongst Leeds United fans. But ‘El Loco’ also explained his fondness for Davis in December.

“Davis is a great player, full of future, resources and skills, but so far Alioski, Douglas and Dallas are playing.

“Maybe for this reality he is not inside the group of 11, but all his tendencies are good. In my opinion, Davis was far from the first team in our first year and after he worked a lot in the team, with brilliant willing, a lot of effort, dedication, he gives everything. Never demand for nothing.”

The Argentine has good reason to. Davis is strong, fast and committed, he ticks the attributes to be a top Bielsa player.

Last season, his progress was held up by a knee operation in April. This season is a familiar tale. Davis had to undergo surgery in January to remove a cartilage blockage. it will see Davis out of action for a month, meaning he will soon be making his steps back into action.

However, it came at the worst time for Davis. With left-back an issue and Douglas out injured the youngster had a chance to potentially push for a regular first-team place earlier this month.

Now he has to build his way back up and once again force his way back into Bielsa’s thinking.
