‘Legend status confirmed’: These Rangers fans react with delight to key player’s announcement

Rangers supporters are ecstatic following confirmation that James Tavernier has signed a contract extension.

The new deal will keep Tavernier at the club until 2024, and is just the latest highlight in a superb season for the club captain.

Having attracted criticism for his performances in the weeks prior to last March’s shutdown, the 29-year-old has turned things round in spectacular fashion and become a key part of his team’s title triumph.

Rangers sealed their first top-tier title win since 2011 in March, and also put together an impressive Europa League run.

Aside from his contribution to a defensive record of just 10 goals conceded in 33 Premiership matches, Tavernier has chipped in with an incredible 17 goals and 15 assists for Steven Gerrard’s side from right-back.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Rangers fans below are delighted to see him commit to their club until 2024.

Tavernier is currently injured, but will hope to be fit in time for the Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Celtic at Ibrox on April 17.

Speaking on the , the Englishman said:“I am delighted to extend my contract at this magnificent club. As soon as I arrived six years ago, I soon realised how massive this club is.

“It isn’t a club really – it’s an institution. To captain Rangers to our historic 55th title is a memory I will hold forever. It is a privilege and an honour to pull on the famous royal blue, and adding the captain’s armband makes it even more special.

“As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, I am mindful that there is much more work to be done to ensure we uphold the values of Rangers.

“I will continue to strive to be better as a player, captain and make sure we continue to set the standard higher than before. 55 wasn’t the end of the journey, it was only the beginning.”
