Leeds youngster Jamie Shackleton has proved he is ready for first-team level

Leeds United’s horrid luck with injuries so far this season has meant manager Marcelo Bielsa has had to rely on the club’s academy for large spells and they certainly haven’t let him down.

The Whites earned a 2-1 victory over QPR at the weekend to ensure they remain in a strong second-placed position in the Championship and have now won four consecutive league matches.

Leeds had to manage at Elland Road against QPR without senior players Luke Ayling, Gaetano Berardi and Stuart Dallas due to injuries, which left the team massively short of genuine options at right-back.

But Bielsa turned to rising star Jamie Shackleton for the answer and he surely must have done enough now to earn the manger’s trust.

The 19-year-old midfielder showed his flexibility by slotting in at right-back and it’s the second separate occasions he’s filled that role brilliantly this season.

Shackleton came in at right-back in a 2-2 draw away to Swansea City earlier in the Championship season and didn’t look out of his depth.

Leeds’ academy product once again was required against QPR and he looked like he could become a regular in the first team in that position if needed.

The teenager was solid defensively for the Yorkshire giants against QPR winger Luke Freeman and his immense work-rate was to be admired.
