Leeds United’s exciting new investment must be used to sign Marcus Maddison
After a disappointing season and a defeat in the first game of their controversial Myanmar visit, Leeds United fans could do with some good news. Today they got two pieces of news that could be construed as positive.
Firstly there is the apparent new investment. that chairman Andrea Radrizzani has sold a share of the club to foreign investors. The deal will see him remain in charge of affairs at the club, but will also secure Leeds a healthy cash injection that will improve their transfer funds for the summer.
Then there is the news that a long-term Leeds target has been placed on the transfer list. It is reported by that Peterborough United have allowed Marcus Maddison to go on the transfer list after a promise made by the club chairman Darragh MacAnthony last summer. He promised the 24-year-old he could look for a new club should the Posh that fail to win promotion. With that now confirmed, Maddison is expected to have clubs clamouring for his signature this summer.
Leeds’ interest in the player is long-term. It goes as far back as when Steve Evans was Leeds manager, who is ironically now his boss at London Road.
Back In January, it was clear that Leeds were still tracking the player. the midfielder was on the radar of Leeds in the winter. But with Peterborough in the play-off mix, it was perhaps no surprise that Maddison stuck around.
Now he is available Leeds must swoop and the news that they have further investment available will surely be a big boost in the hunt for his signature.
The report from January made it clear that offers of £2 million for Maddison were not enough, with chief executive Barry Fry suggesting a figure nearer to £10 million would be needed to secure his services.
Leeds should hopefully not have to pay that much, but with the new investment, they must be ready to pay whatever necessary to bring him in. With 12 goals and 23 assists in 52 games this season, his statistics speak for themselves.
Leeds must be prepared to spend big to bring in the League One star, as he has all the capabilities to be a Championship hero.
