Leeds United target Dan Happe is an ideal Marcelo Bielsa-style ball-playing defender

The race is one for Leyton Orient talent Dan Happe. And Leeds United are one of the clubs keen. , Leyton Orient starlet Happe is attracting attention from Leeds, Leicester City, Norwich City and others.

Happe played a key role in Leyton Orient’s promotion-winning campaign last season. The young defender played 20 games for the O’s, breaking into the starting line-up regularly at the start of 2019.

This took his total appearance tally to 48 for the East London-based outfit. The 20-year-old has decent experience despite his young age and he is an exciting talent for the future.

If Leeds do win the race for Happe, he could be the ideal ball-playing defender to fit Marcelo Bielsa’s style. Having lost young defenders Aapo Halme and Hugo Diaz already this summer, Happe could be a shrewd acquisition.

The London-born defender will not be ready for first-team action just yet. Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Ben White will all be above him in the pecking order.

But he fits the mould as the type of player Bielsa would like in his future side. Happe is 6ft 5in tall, making him a dominant presence in the air at both ends of the pitch.

And he is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Happe usually operates on the left side of a back-three at Leyton Orient. He can use both feet and he is trusted to carry the ball forward and support Joe Widdowson at left-wing-back.

If he can manage the step up, Happe could become a top talent for Leeds. Bielsa is the type of manager who could get the best out of the promising centre-back.
