Leeds United set to trigger Ao Tanaka release clause after announcing Manor Solomon

It has been a busy news day at Elland Road, to say the least.

Just before Leeds United announced the signing of Solomon on loan from Tottenham, a story from the revealed that the Whites are in talks with Fortuna Dusseldorf about a move for Ao Tanaka.

It is said that the Japan international could even fly to Yorkshire tonight to undergo a medical if personal terms are agreed.

Incidentally, Leeds United seem to be speaking to Fortuna Dusseldorf in an attempt to pay a lower fee, as Tanaka actually has a release clause worth just £2.65m written into his contract with the German outfit.

Therefore, Leeds United do not need to agree a fee with the 2.Bundesliga side, as they can go straight into discussions over personal terms with the 25-year-old if a bid of that amount is submitted.

Tanaka – a central midfielder – made 30 appearances for Fortuna Dusseldorf in the 2023/24 campaign, impressively scoring seven goals while also providing four assists.

For those of you who know little about the Fortuna Dusseldorf No.4 and his abilities, a comparison to a more popular player might help.

Interestingly, Tanaka has been compared to Jude Bellingham of all players.
